How do I format my CSV file for importing prospects?

Sequences accepts most CSV files from CRM exports or list providers without needing to change any formatting. However, not all CSV files are alike, so it's best to double-check that you have a few things set up properly. Let's get started! 😄

  1. Your CSV should have a header row that includes the titles of each column - just make sure there's no special characters like dashes or parentheses. 
    1. For example, for a column with emails in it, the first row should say Emails and the following rows will have emails listed.
    2. The header row will allow you to easily map columns to fields and will become the names for your custom fields when using Text Replacements
  2. All text in a cell should be on one line - make sure there aren't any new lines or paragraph text. 
    1. Cells cannot include multiple lines or line breaks in cells.
  3. Remove any empty rows or columns - blank rows and columns can disrupt the import so you'll want to remove those from your spreadsheet
  4. Each row should have one email address - A prospect has to have an email address so any prospects without emails won't get imported
    1. Prospects can only have one email address - if you have a prospect with multiple email addresses, you'll need to create a separate line for each email address
  5. Keep the file size to 1MB or less
    1. If your file is too large, remove columns you don't really need or split your file into separate files under 1 MB.
  6. Export your spreadsheet file to CSV
    1. If you opened the file and made edits to it, you'll want to ensure you save it again as a CSV and not an Excel or Numbers file.
  7. Now you're ready to import your CSV 🎉
