How do I connect my mail account using SMTP?

You can connect just about any email address to VoilaNorbert Sequences using SMTP, known as Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. It uses your mail servers SMTP and IMAP server info, plus your email address and password to authenticate.

You may need to enable SMTP in your mail provider's settings - we recommend reaching out to their support as steps to enable vary by mail provider.

App Passwords

Most mail providers offer Two-Factor Authentication and will default to you enabling this feature. If you don't have it enabled, we recommend enabling it in your mail provider's account settings.

When enabled, you'll be required to use an App Password to connect your mail server with SMTP/IMAP. If you try to enter your normal password, authentication will fail.

If you're unsure how to get an App Password, we recommend consulting your mail provider's support team since the steps to obtain one vary across providers.

What info do I need?

  • Email Address
  • Full Name used for sending
  • SMTP Host (Server Address) and Port Number
  • SMTP Username (this is usually your email address)
  • IMAP Host (Server Address) and Port Number
  • IMAP Username (this is usually your email address)
  • App Password

Connecting your mail account with SMTP

  1. Click Mail Accounts in the left side menu
  2. Click + New Mail Account
  3. Click SMTP
  4. Enter in the email address you'll be sending from as well as the "from" name
    • If you've set up an alias with your mail provider's alias option, you can enter the alias email in this line, but use the main email address for the SMTP/IMAP Username fields
  5. Enter the SMTP information and the App Password you've generated
  6. Enter the IMAP information and the App Password you've generated
  7. Click Next and the system will process the information and attempt to connect

I'm getting errors when trying to connect

Usually an error means that some information is incorrect or SMTP is not enabled on your mail provider's inbox settings.

The Internal Error message is a catchall for many errors, but for SMTP this usually means that there's an authentication error. Here's how to try to fix that:

1. Verify your SMTP and IMAP information by contacting your mail provider's support team and going through that information with them

2. Verify that you've created a new App Password to connect. You don't want to use an old App Password or your login password.

Note: Most mail providers require an App Password to connect to third party email apps that don't use their proprietary sign on. You should be able to generate one in your settings, but if you have trouble with this, contact your Mail Provider. Only your mail provider will be able to generate or show you how to generate an App Password.

If you're still having trouble after verifying everything with your mail provider, reach out to our support team at me@voilanorbert.com and include the following info in your message so we can troubleshoot:

  • Sending Email Address
  • Full Name used for sending
  • SMTP Host (Server Address) and Port Number
  • SMTP Username (this is usually your email address)
  • IMAP Host (Server Address) and Port Number
  • IMAP Username (this is usually your email address)

Please DO NOT include password information. It's never safe to give out your password to anyone, especially over email.
